Year 7 | Students are building upon their knowledge of science from Year 5 and 6 and their understanding of scientific theory. We are integrating STEM activities which teaches the skills needed for thinking about scientific problems across the human body, electricity, energy, simple chemical reactions, forces and their effects. This will include processing and analysing data through practical enquiries and group work. |
Year 8 | Students in Year 8 are extending their knowledge and understanding of scientific theory. Our curriculum continues to integrate working scientifically and STEM activities, which cover the skills needed for thinking about scientific problems with a focus on body processes, everyday chemical reactions, the Earth and space and using energy. This will include processing and analysing data through practical enquiries and group work. |
Year 9 | In Year 9 students begin to develop skills in application of knowledge to GCSE questions covering the basic fundamental building block units for biology, chemistry and physics including cells, atomic structure and energy. |
Year 10 | Students in Y10 will continue to build on their prior science knowledge to develop an understanding of cells, biological processes and how the body responds to changes, chemical reactions and organic chemistry, the effects of force and how energy can be transferred. Students will continue to develop and apply the required practical skills in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. There will be an emphasis on the development of practical skills to further enhance the understanding of key concepts. |
Year 11 |
Students in Year 11 will develop a deeper understanding of the applications of Science and how they affect their everyday lives and industries around them. They should be able to apply prior learning to unfamiliar situations. Students will also continue to build on their knowledge to develop an understanding of ecology, genetics, reproduction, chemical analysis, energy transfers and uses of energy. Students will have developed the skills and understanding needed to give them the opportunity to progress onto a range of science based courses. This will include an understanding of the exam command words. |
Year 12 |
Chemistry – Students expand on their GCSE knowledge looking further into industries related to Chemistry and How Chemistry impacts the world. The knowledge acquired at GCSE will be applied to the key principles of Year 12 chemistry and developed with greater depth with a wider application of maths Students develop practical skills to allow them to progress onto further education, biochemistry and industrial placements. Biology – Students will develop and demonstrate a deep appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of scientific methods as well as competence and confidence in a variety of practical, mathematical and problem solving skills in biology. We aim to develop interest and enthusiasm for the subject, including in further study and careers including an understanding of how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society. The ability to apply mathematical and practical skills to areas of content as well as the ability to draw together different areas of knowledge and understanding to new contexts. Physics - Students will develop skills, knowledge and understanding of different areas of physics and their relationship to each other. How scientific methods are used in a variety of practical, mathematical and problem solving situations. The application of physics in further study and careers, and the importance of physics for its contribution to the success of the economy and society. |
Year 13 |
Chemistry – Students are encouraged to develop their interest in and enthusiasm for the subject, including developing an interest in further study and careers associated within the subject through developing essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of the subject and how they relate to each other. This includes considering the applications and implications of science and evaluating their associated benefits and risks, considering the ethical issues in the treatment of humans, other organisms and the environment. Biology – Students build on their knowledge from Year 1 and apply this in greater depth to new situations and systems, identifying how processes and structures previously studied can interact to enable an organism to function and how the knowledge of how an organism works can lead to medical and scientific advances. Students will also further develop their investigative and analytical skills through their practical work. The knowledge and skills they develop will help their progression onto further studies, training or into employment. Physics - Students build a higher level of maths into the course as well as more connections between topics. Students will develop a more detailed knowledge of how investigations into different theories have led to advancement with our understanding of key concepts and ideas. |
